Catch one. Share one."。 ________________
From Small Talk to Trust Talk is the ninth session in the Flexible Leadership series run by the Workplace Growth Club, a volunteer community for Chinese-speaking professionals in tech. Rather than offering the familiar advice to "be curious and be authentic," the session takes apart the five workplace situations people most want to escape — the routine 1:1, the skip-level, the large meeting, the networking event, and the company picnic — and supplies language participants can use verbatim. It rests on a single observation: most conversations don't die at hello, they die at sentence two, and the fix isn't a longer list of topics but the habit of catching one word the other person just said. The WATER method (Warm, Ask, Track, Exchange, Release) compresses into one line participants actually remember: Ask one. Catch one. Share one. The 75-minute online format stays in the main room throughout — no breakout rooms, no cold calls, no camera or microphone required — with participation through polls, chat prompts, and reactions, and everyone leaves with a Small Talk Pocket Card they filled in themselves plus one concrete commitment for the week ahead. The through-line is the stance the whole series is built on: you don't need to become an extrovert, you need to hand someone a ball they can easily catch. Lead like water — soft is not weak.
